Air Canada plane crashes at LaGuardia airport, pilots killed

An Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire truck upon landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Both pilots were killed, dozens injured. The airport is closed.

An Air Canada Express flight from Montreal with 72 passengers and 4 crew members collided with a fire truck at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 11:40 PM. The collision, which happened shortly after landing, resulted in the deaths of both the captain and the co-pilot. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 41 people, including two airport rescue workers, were taken to the hospital with injuries. A recording of communication with air traffic control shows that the fire truck crew requested to cross runway 4, where the Air Canada plane was supposed to land. Immediately after, a voice, likely an air traffic controller, instructed the truck to cross runway 4 in delta. The voice then continued: 'Stop, stop, stop, stop, truck 1, stop, stop, stop!' The aircraft impacted a Port Authority truck shortly after landing and came to a stop on the runway. Photos from the crash site show the front of the plane, including the cockpit, completely destroyed, with debris hanging from the nose section. LaGuardia Airport will remain closed at least until 2:00 PM. The flight, which departed from Montreal, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, according to Jazz Aviation LP, the operating company, in a statement. Newark Liberty International Airport suspended all departures on Monday, March 23, after the control tower was evacuated, taking two of New York's main hubs out of service, and the reason for the evacuation was not specified. An accident at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night also forced the suspension of services at that airport. The suspension of ground operations is scheduled at least until 8:30 AM, with a medium probability of an extension, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in a statement. Part of the air traffic was diverted from LaGuardia after an Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire truck on Sunday night, causing the death of the two pilots on board and leaving several dozen passengers injured.
